Seems I cannot avoid this mother-daughter theme. Today we watched Because I said so with Diane Keaton, and I couldn't help noticing how much the character resembled my Mom. Of course it was a bit exaggerated, but I had to laugh out loud.
The story is a simple one, and not even unique for that matter. There is a mother, Daphne Wilder (Keaton) with three daughters (Lauren Graham, Piper Perabo, and Mandy Moore). Milly, the youngest keeps screwing her relationships, which Daphne relates to her choosing the wrong guys. To solve the problem, Daphne puts an ad on the Net, seeking the ideal partner for Milly. As it usually happens in such films, she meets lots of freaks, until finally she meets an architect, who has all the feautures she is looking for. He is successful and wealthy, likes opera, knows wines, etc. Accidentally there is a band playing in the restaurant where Daphne is meeting the potential sons-in-law, and the guitarist notices how Daphne keeps interviewing the guys, and steals a business card of Milly to get to know her. So, in a nutshell, the story is about Milly's dilemma related to the two very different guys. (Put your hands up, anyone, if you would opt for the architect.)
The film would be a soda drink were it not for Keaton, who is still amazing. (If you haven't seen her in her early roles in Woody Allen movies, you definitely should. So much energy and aura.) Her favorite phrase, as suggested in the title, is "Because I said so." With this, she keeps controlling Milly's life in the most annoying ways, for example rearranging her furniture, calling her while she's on a date, and so on. All in the name of wishing the best. Of course, it is partly true that a mother never ceases to be a mother, even if her children have grown up, but one should find that thin dividing line between insanity and normalcy.
As I said, the story is not a big deal, and is quite predictable, but I would recommend the movie heartily. The architect guy is way too snobbish but the musician is just the type I fall for. And even his dad (the priest from the series Seventh Heaven) is really sexy. And I think anyone with a mother (or a mother with daughters) should see it to have a good laugh. Only make sure your guys don't start banging their heads during the soapy scenes.
